Underwater World

Sabah

Take a deep breath...

If you read my last post from here in Sabah then you’ll be well aware that this part of the globe looks very nice from the air.  So, now let me take you through that turquoise sheen to take a peek at what’s going on underneath it all.

It’s no wonder that this part of Borneo is often labelled one of  the best dive spots on the planet.  There is certainly a lot of life for scuba divers to see dotted around the plentiful reefs, something that the Bajau skin divers who have chosen to live in the area know all too well.  We’ve spent the last couple of days with 4 families who live a nomadic life solely on boats.  Devoid of any nationality, these Bajau Laut live a precarious life amidst the region’s ever tightening border controls, a common predicament facing nomadic peoples the world over at this time in history.

In a few days we’ll be leaving Sabah, bound for the Philippines and yet another ocean adventure for Human Planet…  See you there.

I like how you decided to blur out all the background without even the slightest detail except for basically the face. I like the makeup or mask of some sort on her face because I cant tell what it is and it makes me wonder if this is a tradition or if any one else in her village does the same thing. It would be interesting to see more images about how they live.

The mask is made from a local concoction that the Bajau apply to their faces in order to protect their skin from the harsh sun and lighten its colour. I’ll post some more pictures from this shoot a little nearer the transmission date of the program
